NYFW Redux: Mod Squad

So I'm mucho behind-o on whatever is going on in the various fashion weeks but thankfully I am back in the land of free wifi, so I've started to make a dent on New York's offerings.

It started at Phillip Lim with this three-piece skirt that you could mix and match and swivel to create your own look. And then there was this skirt-on-skirt action going on at Rodarte. And this dress-over-a-skirt thing at Wayne. I thought about it and decided it was kind of like the modular shelving you get at Ikea, where you have a certain number of pieces you can mix and match to create your own personal look. And then I realized, duh, that's what your whole closet is anyway; so much for the modular analogy.

But anyway, point is, we've been layering shirts and jackets and vests for years; we even did that whole dress or skirt over pants or leggings thing for quite some time. But this, ladies and gentlemen, is a revelation. Skirts on top of skirts on top of... skirts. It's like a big same-sex orgy, except instead of guys on top of sweaty other guys or a T&A festival, it's glorious, frivolous, kinky skirts.

Fur Sure

When I was a kid and I watched My Neighbour Totoro, it was always my greatest fantasy to go for a ride in the furry cat bus, or snuggle up in the cuddly embrace of the giant Totoro. God, don't I wish I could do that today. But in the spirit of Japanese anime, if I can't have a Totoro, maybe I can BE a Totoro, except instead of going plushie...

I'd go 3.1 Phillip Lim. Grey Mongolian lamb fur. Political correctness be damned, just keep me warm already.

Size Matters

I absolutely love big chunky statement jewellery and I do mean big, hey look at me kind of jewellery. Although I am over the term ‘statement’ piece. Everything from a two strand pewter chain to really over the top pieces are now labelled as statement and we really need to come up with another term for it. Anyway, I digress. It is with a great squeal of glee that I check out the Spring/Summer collections and find some pieces that I absolutely adore. Here are some that made it on FashionGeek’s wish list (with more to come I’m sure)
Let's start with the above necklace from 3.1 Phillip Lim. Is it a collar? Is it made out of origami? Who cares. I want.

Check out the giant beads from Michael Kors. I do hope they are resin and not glass. It must be heavy yet I will risk neck pains for that piece.

Necklaces down to the waist are always so hot. You can always double strand it, or multi-strand it as a bracelet but Oscar de la Renta keeps it simple here.

Vera Wang takes the term bib necklace to a whole other level.

I'm of the camp that pearls need not be for old ladies and Reem Acra obviously agrees

Chains, thick, thin, and in between are so sexy and this Helmut Lang chunky chain necklace is hot hot hot.

Jump(suits) for joy!

My first jumpsuit purchase came from those "outlet" shops in Causeway Bay opposite Mitsukoshi -- it was at the height of J.Lo's popularity, in black velour with a white racing stripe down the side, with a hood. The garment kind of scarred me, because I wore it once to work on a casual Friday, thinking that I wouldn't be seeing anyone important, only to find out upon arriving at the office that I had just been promoted (yay!), would be interviewing my own assistant editor (yay!) and that the first candidate would be coming in that afternoon (uh-oh). The girl who came in was six years my senior, and I figured that she would never be able to respect/work for someone who interviewed her in a velour jumpsuit, so by default she was not hired. Oh well.

Anyway, that's a very off-topic introduction to the topic of this blog, which is jumpsuits. I absolutely love love love that they have returned to mainstream fashion vocabulary, especially now that high-street retailers have finally picked up on the trend. (You don't know how many hours I spent on eBay last year intimately perusing the listings for the perfect playsuit, and how many not-that-great pieces I purchased online just for lack of choice. Okay, it was three.) You know they've officially "arrived" because "jumpsuit" is now a category on most online retail sites now.

There's something so convenient about the garment (although they do make it VERY inconvenient to use the bathroom...) and so effortlessly chic. With easy, breezy springtime coming, I wonder how Hong Kong's fashionistas will embrace the trend? (Speaking of embracing trends, why did we choose this year, the year of the non-existent winter, to fall in love with Uggs?)

If you decide the trend is for you, here are some divine picks. And just my personal styling tips:
- If you go short, wear heels, or it will look like you went out in your jammies.
- Boys do not understand jumpsuits -- file jumpsuits together with the "leggings or pants under dresses" and "ballet flats" trends, which they also do not get.
- Accessories should be piled on. The simplicity of a one-piece requires the pizzazz of a whole lotta other stuff.
- Solids trump prints if you want to look current.
- And whatever you do, don't wear a velour jumpsuit. Ditto terry cloth. Ditto denim, unless you're going for the Charlie's Angels look.
