Nikko at Night

The Hotel Nikko isn't exactly at the top of everyone's list of favourite hotels -- I can't even remember the last time I went -- but if there's anything that can convince a gal to trek across a harbour, it's chocolate. And when you throw a bit of booze into the mix, it usually only increases that powerful, body-of-water-crossing aphrodisiac. Just make sure you have a ride home. (We blog like no one lives in Kowloon. That is the sad and sheltered life we lead. Sorry Kowloonies, we know you are regular people too, just "location-impaired.")

First off, speaking of location, the perks of going to Kowloon include the fact that you get to look at Hong Kong island. So the Sky Lounge at Hotel Nikko, with its harbourside spot, is an apt place to sip fancy cocktails as you watch the sun set and transition from day to glittering night.

The new roster of choco-cocktails kick off with the Chocolateini, a mix of vodka, crème de white cacao and dry vermouth.

There's the Choco Dance, which combines vodka, crème de dark cacao, crème de banana, fresh milk and banana.

The rosy-hued Sweet Cocoa throws together vodka, crème de white cacao, fresh milk and raspberry purée.

And the final in the quartet, the sinful Melting Kiss is made up of crème de white cacao, Bailey’s Irish cream, green peppermint liqueur and fresh milk

Geek Spy: Fledgling Wine

Twitter is expanding its reaches besides being a social medium for connecting people, getting news and generally a forum for Bieber bashing. Partnering with Crushpad, a winemaker in California, Twitter has launched its own wine titled appropriately enough Fledgling Wine. Two vintages have been issued a 2009 Chardonnay and a 2009 Pinot Noir, which according to the FAQ on the site, appears to be an excellent vintage in California, potentially one of the best of the decade. There is a charitable element to this where US$5 from each bottle sold is donated to Room to Read, an organization that battle illiteracy. So why this foray into the wine industry? From the mouths of the cofounders behind Twitter:

“The Fledgling Initiative embodies two things that are at the core of Twitter's mission: providing access to information and highlighting the power of open communication to bring about positive change. This initiative is just one piece of that approach. Take part in this mission and pre-buy our limited bottles of the wine. You can follow along with our wine-making activities on Twitter and at some points even participate in its creation. For each bottle you buy, $5 will be donated to Room to Read, a transformational non-profit that brings books, libraries and ultimately literacy to people in the poorest areas around the world. The efforts of Room to Read will benefit literacy, and in doing so they'll allow Twitter to grow. Because if you can't read you can't Tweet!”

Maybe I’ve been drinking the Kool-Aid but that seems to actually make some sense to me.

P.S. It wasn’t deliberate on my part to write three bird related posts in a row, Angry Bird stuffed toys, Chicken Battle and now this.

iPhone Show & Tell: Chicken Battle

Yesterday I was telling you about how writing about Angry Birds plushies reminded me of an iPhone game to introduce to you and here it is. Chicken Battle is like the adorable if slightly inferior little brother of Plants vs Zombies . Still curiously addictive but like PvZ, not too challenging. Though the cute graphics kinda makes it worth spending the whole day playing the game just to find out what other types of chickies there are. The game doesn't offer as many levels and variety as PvZ and be prepared for having to do some grinding and leveling up for the harder stages. All in all not bad for a casual strategy game. It was free when I downloaded it over the weekend but I believe it's now back to US$0.99. Check out the lite version for a preview.

Getting Dumped: Lanvin x H&M

The meaning of this title is twofold: firstly, that I am simply dumping this image orgy of Lanvin X H&M images on you because words cannot do justice; secondly, that if you just got dumped, having the ex see you all fabbed out in some crazy hot Lanvin x H&M is sort of the perfect revenge... or at the very least will allow you to feel good about yourself, if your ex is not some fashion-obsessed person. In which case, you're better off without him or her, no?

Anyway... on to the full set of lookbook pics.

Hold Me Thrill Me Kissel Me Kill Me

My inordinate interest in the Robert Kissel murder case continues anew after finishing Never Enough last night. Since the Hong Kong media has been banned from reporting on the new trial's proceedings, I shall have to get my milkshake murder fix elsewhere. And of all the random Kissel-associated media I found... John Stamos produced a Lifetime movie about the case? It's called The Two Mr Kissels. Yay for crappy movie titles that don't really mean anything. Stamos stars as Robert's brother Andrew, also murdered not long after Robert in a sensational manner, while Robin Tunney does the honours as Nancy Kissel. Who would've thought, Uncle Jesse and that girl from Empire Records. Anyway, I'm buying it now off Amazon since I have no hope of finding it in my dodgy DVD store. If you want to borrow it, let me know.

Also on the list of Kissel-related items with bad titles -- A Family Cursed: The Kissel Dynasty, a Gilded Fortune, and Two Brutal Murders. I want to get it too but there isn't a Kindle version and I'm not sure I should spend any more money chasing the truth behind this scandalous killing.

Gone Cuckoo

I'm of the extremely small group of people that aren't as enthralled with Angry Birds as the rest of the world but I suspect it's merely coz I'm more of a tower defense kinda girl. Which reminds me, I have another iPhone game to introduce to you all but more on that in another post. Anyway, for those who are in love with Angry Birds, yes ShoeGeek I'm specifically talking to you, maybe these would be some good Christmas gifts to put on your wish list. Limited edition Angry Bird plush toys. Available for pre-order now for US$14.99. Once these ship, I fully expect to see YouTube bombarded with home videos of the real life Angry Birds plushies attacking the evil pigs. Pre-order them now at TopWiz.

Enough is Enough

I cannot post today more than this because I am deeply engrossed in the wretchedly compelling words of one Mr Joe McGinnis, author of Never Enough, the richly seedy true crime novel that exposes all the sordid details of the Nancy Kissel murder. Hongkongers here in 2003 will remember the case well; our very own OJ-level murder mystery. And while I constantly berate myself for subjecting my brain to such horribly sensational truth-stretching drivel, it's made owning a Kindle well worth the price. I need to have this book at all times until it is completely devoured. If, like me, you were more riveted by this case than you are by your own love life, you need to get it. Read it with a quickness, it's the only way to escape the pain of McGinnis' annoying, Anglo-centric, one-dimensional and repetitive voice. This is the guy who until recently was stalking Sarah Palin. And he thought the Kissels were creepy.

Get it at Amazon. Thanks to the lovely Katie for the recommendation. I love you and hate you at the same time for it. Fancy a milkshake?

Who would have thought that ShoeGeek and I would be able to put up 1000 posts on this blog? There are definitely days when the two of us wonder why on earth we write Hong Kong Fashion Geek. It could not have been done without you, our loyal readers. Thank you for giving us the encouragement to keep writing.

SHOErotica: Alexander Wang Addison Leather Boots

Ish finally cold enough to boot up. And I am off to sunny Singapore! It's midnight and I haven't finished packing yet so that's all for now, but the burnt orange toe on this reminds me of cliched sunsets and walks on the beach. A perfect amalgamation of warm summer-to-fall nights, and winter practicality.

Revel in Bevel Jewelry

You know that line in American Beauty where that tortured emo guy who hooks up with Thora Birch is all like... "sometimes there's so much beauty in the world that it HURTS" and then Sam Mendes cuts to this video of a plastic bag flying around like it's meant to be some sort of visual cue to make us viewers realize, wow, the world IS beautiful, that plastic bag IS beautiful, in fact, we are ALL beautiful, hugsies! That was such a crock. But I still loved the movie.

Anyway, what Mendes should have instead filmed as an analogy for beauty, instead of a plastic bag floating in the wind like an unused extra from the Forrest Gump prop room, is some of this jewellery by Bevel, a new New York-based house whose brand of macabre, eerie jewellery actually matches up quite well with the Oscar-winning film. Okay, so this jewellery probably would not float in the wind. And for budget reasons, I guess a plastic bag comes free with a drink at 7-Eleven (or 50 cents if you're in Hong Kong), and a Xibalban Bloom necklace by Bevel (last shot after the cut) is US$1470. I guess that's why one of us is an Oscar-winning director, and one of us is a part-time blogger code-named Geek.
