Think Pink: Barbie Girl

Barbie is the girl that has it all. An impossibly thin waist. A face that never ages. All sorts of fun careers and now we can covet her jewellery. Come October 20, Christie’s New York will be auctioning off the world’ most expensive Barbie (presale estimate of US$300,000 to US$500,000.) Yes, you can buy a small apartment in Hong Kong with this Barbie. Of course the apartment will be tiny judging by the soaring property prices but still, not a bad deal for a 50 year old plastic doll. What makes her so expensive? She will be wearing a necklace featuring a one-carat fancy vivid pink diamond alongside three carats of white diamonds created by fine jewellery designer Stefano Canturi. The item will be auctioned without reserve and all profits from the sale will benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Now my question is, is there any way to transform this necklace into a pendant or brooch so that whoever buys it can also have a chance to wear the piece?

Geeking Out

So a few weeks ago, we talked about Mattel asking us to cast a vote as to what career Barbie should embarked on in 2010 and one of the choices was Computer Engineer Barbie. Well, the geeks have spoken and she is now about to launch a career in the technology world. So now our question is, what kind of outfit would she wear? According to the press release, Barbie will be wearing a binary code patterned tee and equipped with all the latest gadgets including a smart phone, Bluetooth headset, and laptop travel bag. Where did they come up with this look? Apparently, in collaboration with the Society of Women Engineers and the National Academy of Engineering.

Us Geeks however, think that she shouldn’t sacrifice fashion for geekdom and fall into the clichéd zeros and ones. After all, this is the girl who has all the top designers creating outfits for her. Put her in some of those Louboutins, make her wear a casual yet sexy Alexander Wang T and pair it with Threeasfour pants. And finally, give her an iPhone so she can tweet, foursquare and facebook all in one go! Computer Engineer Barbie is currently available for pre-order exclusively at www.MattelShop.com.

Bringing Geeky Back

We've always thought being a geek is pretty sexy and now we are getting affirmation for our beliefs. The creators behind the iconic Barbie doll is asking us to vote for her next career and Mattel is fully on board with geekiness being the next big thing. Since her debut in 1959, Barbie has had over 120 careers. She's been an astronaut, a pilot, a rock star, and a veterinarian. And for the first time, Barbie can indulge in her techie side and become a computer engineer. Cast your vote here.
