Brunch Club: H one

We’ve mentioned in the past that H one does some pretty unexpected collaborations which I’m not sure is to the benefit of the self-proclaimed Italian restaurant. I suspect that the powers that be at JC Group have taken note of that post which is why their latest promotion focuses firmly on the Italian aspects of cuisine. (Okay, okay, while I know it’s unlikely that our website has influenced the powers that be, it’s a nice little positive reinforcement for the Geeks so bear with it.) So moving on to the new promotion. H one is offering a Summer Delight Saturday Brunch priced at HK$298 per adult and HK$198 per child, plus 10% service charge.

Appetisers include freshly shucked Pacific Rock oyster, Italian Parma ham with melon, smoked duck breast, organic salad bar, Buffalo Mozzarella cheese with Italian tomatoes, Japanese sashimi, beef carpaccio, Sicilian seafood salad, Hickory smoked salmon, cold cuts and salamis amongst others.

Expect to see a live cooking pasta station that serves three different kinds of pasta accompanied with a wide selection of seafood and condiments, cooked-to-order in tomato sauce, cream sauce or pesto sauce.

Main course choices are Chef Luca’s renowned “Roast of the Day”, wood stone roasted half Maine lobster, and four other dishes with meat, chicken, fish and vegetables, menu changing every week, highlights are charcoal grilled lamb fillet, seared Coral trout, roasted spring chicken and charcoal grilled pork sausage.

For me, the dessert selection of a buffet makes or breaks the deal and this one isn’t half bad. Choose from mini cheese cake, Panna Cotta, Tiramisu, chocolate truffle slice, mini chestnut tart, crème brulee, crunch cake, double chocolate cake, mango mousse cake and a fresh fruit platter.

The Saturday brunch serves from 11:30am to 2:30pm and priced at HK$298 per adult and HK$198 per child, plus 10% service charge.

Advanced reservations are recommended, please call (852) 2805-0638. H one is at Shop 4008, Podium Level 4, ifc mall, 8 Finance Street, Central, Hong Kong.

Divine Domani

Went to Domani's for their new weekend semi-buffet, which includes antipasti and dessert buffets and a main course for $350-$450, with an add-on $200 for free-flow, prosecco, red, white, beer and juice. I don't have much to say, because I already wrote 1000 words on it for a six-page spread which will appear in the magazine I work for. If you want the eloquent and properly written review, pick that up instead. Here, I'll just say... it's good, really good. The tagliatelle and grilled shrimp we opted for were awesomeness. And the strawberry mousse thing: Yum. Go and sit for four hours on the terrace, and really get your money's worth on beverages.

Proper food porn after the cut.

Yo Mama

This Sunday is the one day of the year you should refrain from using Yo Mama jokes, because it's in honour of the woman who gave birth to you. If you're woefully behind on planning, and unlike my mother, yours did not go ahead and make plans for her own celebratory meal, then here's a quick rundown of a few snazzy places doing Mother's Day specials.

H one - lunch buffet ($468) or set dinner ($688) plus a free Guerlain lipstick for tables of 4 or more. Call 852 2805 0638.

Roka - regular menu, but free dessert for mommy and a coupon for tea set @ $88 and buy-1-get-1-free dessert. Call 852 3960 5988.

Morton's of Chicago - Three-course dinner at $675 including salad, steak and dessert. Call 852 2732 2343.

Bubba Gump - regular menu, but free photo souvenir taken and presented with frame (whoop-dee-do...). Call 852 2849 2867.

Angelini's - Four-course dinner at $680 and a complimentary bellini for each guest. (If you only get it with the set dinner, then really isn't is just $680 including a bellini, instead of "each guest will receive a complimentary bellini"? Oh, the trickery involved in press releases!) Anyway, call 852 2733 8750.

Shang Palace - Set lunches for $220 or $280 and set dinners for $468 or $668, all canto specialties including the typical, fin and lobster and all sorts of seafood specials.

The Mistral - "A romantic Italian dinner for mom" reads the press release. EW, talk about playing into Oedipal urges, which is something that really shouldn't be encouraged. Antipasti and dessert buffet by candlelight, plus choice of mains for $588. ($298 for kids under 11, but really, this kinda stuff isn't really for the young 'uns. Shudder.) Call 852 2731 2870.

Jimmy's Kitchen - Four-course set at $398 a head. Comes with a festive gift pack that includes a $500 Elemis spa coupon and other skincare products/coupons, plus a polaroid photo frame. Call 852 2526 5293.

Tiffin Lounge - Crazy unlimited Moet buffet with loads of yummy dishes, though pricey at $738 a head. Buffets also at their other outlets at varying prices. Call 852 2588 1234.

Excelsior hotel - Cafe on the 1st, Excelsior's buffet spot is doing lunch buffets at $438 a head. Yee Toh Heen is doing dinner for six at $2,888. Call 852 2837 6840.

Nobu - one set dinner free for every four, in other words, mommy dines for free (which is good because you're probably paying.) Call +852 2313 2323.

If you're wondering about gifts, Intercontinental Hotel's I-Spa is doing a whole bunch of specials just for mommies of different ages and stages, titled "New Mom" or "Mommy To Be" or "Yummy Mummy" etc. Call them at 852 2721 1211.

Brunch Club: Nobu

Nobu is much too classy of a place to be doing buffet brunches, but when the economy's down, it takes everyone out with it, sushi chefs included. (Been reading that even Japanese yakuza are getting laid off or taking pay cuts. For some reason that makes me feel better? But then, I have a job. I wonder if it will make those 100 HSBC casualties feel better.) The four-course lunch set at Nobu features an appetizer selection, choice of one main dish, choice of udon, chirashi or DIY handrolls (fun!) and a dessert. All for a relatively conservative HK$380.

The menu:

Appetizers (choose four):
Black Cod Lettuce
Botan Ebi Sashimi "New Style"
Creamy Spicy Crab
King Crab Tempura Amazu Ponzu
Octopus Dry Miso
O-Toro Tataki Yuzu Miso
Rock Shrimp Creamy Spicy Sauce
Salmon Tartar with Caviar
Sashimi Taco Yellowtail Jalapeno
Anticucho or Teriyaki Skewer
(Choice of Chicken, Salmon, Beef or Vegetable)

Mains (choose one):
Black Cod Saikyo Yaki
Steamed Chilean Seabass Dry Miso
Sautéed Prawn and Scallop with Ginger Teriyaki
Beef Tenderloin with Wasabi Salsa
Wood Oven Roasted Spring Chicken

Dessert (choose one):
Bread Pudding
Nobu Style Chocolate Bento Box
Japanese Fruit Platter
Vanilla Tamago Crème
Banana Tofu Brulee
Suntory Whisky Iced Cappuccino

Nobu is at the InterContinental Hong Kong, 18 Salisbury Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. Tel: 852 2313 2323.

Brunch Club: Unkai

Not to hard-sell the Sheraton's F&B outlets today, but in the spirit of bougie brunching, I wanted to bring you Unkai's free-flow weekend lunch. For most restaurants, free-flow refers to the bubbly booze, but at Unkai, it means infinite amounts of succulent Australian Wagyu beef, fresh Atlantic salmon, giant Hokkaido scallops, free-range Chicken Breast and more, accompanied by refreshing starters, tempting dessert and unlimited Asahi or tea. All these are teppanyaki-ed before your very eyes for at the mouthwatering price of $388 per head (or mouth, rather).

I have fond memories of Unkai, which has been around fat least since the days of my graduation from Primary School. My parents did a dinner in the private room at Unkai and although in my family that is known as the day we walked into a tatami room filled with hundreds of balloons, (no small feat to coordinate, you understand) it is also in fact the day that we kiddies had our first taste of Kobe beef. We haven't looked back since.

This is an ongoing weekend promo, available from noon to 2:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Unkai at the Sheraton Hong Kong, 20 Nathan Road, Kowloon. Tel: 852 2369 1111.

Brunch Club: Grand Hyatt's Poolside Grill

Take advantage of this in-between weather to hit up Grand Hyatt's poolside The Grill, in my opinion one of Hong Kong's premier alfresco dining destinations. They've extended their Sunday Barbecue Brunch offer till the end of May (appropriate, since that's when it'll either get unbearably hot or unprofitably rainy), with "delicious breakfast items, fresh and healthy salads, barbecued specialties, seafood on ice, desserts as well as a fresh juice and smoothies station."

SOLD. From noon to 3pm on Sundays. Best part? $320 for adults, and add only $70 for free-flow wine, Prosecco and beer.
